Chapter 3 will go into detail about the next steps–writing a resume and cover letter, interviewing well, follow-up communications, securing references, and more. This is information you can use to secure internships, volunteer positions, summer jobs, and so on. The sooner you can hone these skills, the better off you’ll be in the professional world.

Pursuing the Educational Path

Making decisions about your educational path can be just as complex a process as choosing a career in the first place. It is a decision that not only demands understanding what kind of education or training is required for the career you want, but also what kind of school or college you want to attend and, of course, how you are going to pay for it and balance it with the other commitments you have in your life, whether family or work. Everyone has different circumstances that need to be taken into consideration, be they geographical or economical. There is a lot to consider no matter what area of study you want to pursue, and depending on the type of job you want to have within the field of childcare.

Now that you’ve gotten an overview of the different degree options that can prepare you for your future career as a childcare professional, this chapter will dig more deeply into how to best choose the right type of educational and training plan for you. Even if you are years away from earning your high school diploma or equivalent, it’s never too soon to start weighing your options, thinking about the application process, and of course taking time to really consider what kind of educational track and environment will suit you best.

Not everyone wants to take time to go to college or pursue additional academic-based training, and for many careers it is not required, even if recommended. And although a career in childcare is one you can, in some states, enter even without a high school diploma (check your state), it is always in your best interest to continue with your education as far as you can. Even if it takes longer because you are working while you complete your studies or earn childcare-related certifications (many of which are definitely required to work legally), the more you invest in your education and training, the further you can go in your career and the more you will earn.

So if you are interested in and prepared to follow the post–high school (or advanced) educational path, this chapter will help you navigate the process of deciding on the type of institution you would most thrive in, determining what type of degree you want to earn, and looking into costs and how to find help in meeting them.

The chapter will also give you advice on the application process, how to prepare for any entrance exams such as the SAT or ACT that you may need to take, and how to communicate your passion, ambition, and personal experience in a personal statement.
